Electoral System: 

  • The President is directly elected to a five-year term. 

  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the President and is generally the leader of the majority party in the Chamber of Deputies. 

  • The 200 members of the Chamber of Deputies (Poslanecká sněmovna) are elected by proportional representation from 14 districts with a 5% threshold. They are elected to four-year terms. 

  • The 81 members of the Senate (Senat) are elected through a two-round system when the two most successful candidates from the first round face each other again in the second round usually a week later. They are elected to six-year terms with a third of the members being elected every two years.
