  • The 90 seats in the Slovenian National Assembly (Drzavni Zbor)

Description of government structure:

  • Chief of State: President Borut PAHOR (since 22 December 2012)**
  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Miro CERAR (announced resignation 15 March 2018)
  • Assembly: Slovenia has a bicameral Parliament. The National Council (Drzavni Svet) which has 40 seats and the National Assembly (Drzavni Zbor) has 90 seats.

**The President nominates as Prime Minister the party member he thinks will most likely to be able to assemble a viable government coalition. His candidate then must be approved by the members of the National Assembly

Description of electoral system:

  • The President is elected by absolute majority vote through a two-round system to serve a 5-year term.
  • The Prime Minister is nominated by the president.
  • In the National Council (Drzavni svet) 40 members are elected by an electoral college to serve 5-year terms. In the National Assembly (Drzavni zbor), 88 members are elected through an open-list proportional representation system to serve 4-year terms and 2 members are elected through a Borda Count system to serve 4-year terms.**

** The two members are elected only by registered members of the Italian and Hungarian ethnic minorities.

Election Note:

  • On 15 March 2018, Prime Minister Miro CERAR announced his resignation. This came after the Supreme Court annulled a referendum approving a €1 billion government railway project. No replacement has been named yet (as of 14 June 2018).

  • The last election to the National Assembly in Slovenia was held on 13 July 2014. Miro Cerar's Modern Center Party won 36 seats and formed a majority coalition (52 of 90 seats) with the Social Democrats (6 seats) and the Democratic Party of Pensioners (10 seats). The Democratic Party of Slovenia finished second with 21 seats.
