EU’s Newest Member, Croatia, Votes for President ; January 2015 Runoff Required

Croatia held the first presidential election since it became a European Union (EU) member on Sunday 28 December 2014.[i] Located in Europe, Croatia has a population of 4,470,534 with approximately 2,253,570 registered voters.[ii] With 99.98 percent of the votes counted, incumbent President Ivo JOSIPOVIC is ahead with 38.5 percent, while Croatia Democratic Union (HDZ) candidate Kolinda GRABAR-KITAROVIC has 37 percent.[iii] Since no candidate in the race will attain 50 percent of the vote needed to win, Mr. JOSIPOVIC and Ms. GRABAR-KITAROVIC will compete in a runoff-election scheduled for Sunday 11 January 2015.[iv] Turnout for the election was at 47 percent.[v]
