Uzbekistan Holds Parliamentary Elections and OSCE Says Not Competitive

Dec. 31, 2014, 12:50 p.m.

Uzbekistan held an election for 135 (of 150) seats in the Legislative Chamber (Qonunchilik Palatasi) on Sunday 21 December 2014.[i] Located in Central Asia, Uzbekistan has a population of 28,929,716 with approximately 20,789,572 registered voters.[ii][iii] Preliminary results are due in the coming days, but the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has claimed that because only four parties, all aligned with the government, ran in the election, the vote could not be considered competitive. [iv] Despite this observation, the OSCE noted that the election was competently administered. Additionally, Election Day turnout was high at 88 percent.[v]
