Tunisia Presidential Runoff-Election Sees Nidaa Tounes’ ESSEBSI Win

Tunisia held the second round of the presidential election on Sunday 21 December 2014.[i] The first round was held on Sunday 23 November 2014 and 27 candidates competed. However, no candidate attained the 50 percent vote threshold to win. Thus, Beji Caid ESSEBSI of the Nidaa Tounes party and incumbent President Moncef MARZOUKI won the largest vote totals and were set to compete in the December runoff-election. Located in North Africa, Tunisia has a population of 10,937,521 with 5,285,136 registered voters.[ii] Preliminary results have Mr. ESSEBSI winning 55.68 percent of the vote, and Mr. MARZOUKI winning 44.32 percent.[iii] Turnout was at 59 percent.[iv] Mr. MARZOUKI conceded the election.[v]
